The Cappella Singers:

The Cappella Singers are a friendly mixed-voice amateur chamber choir, with around 20 members.

Based in Upminster, Essex, we are members of Havering Arts Council, and we have a good reputation for high standard performances of a varied repertoire.

We enjoy singing sacred and secular music, old and new – from Tallis to Tavener!

(see: examples of recent programmes for a flavour of our repertoire).

Despite our name, not all our singing is “a cappella” (unaccompanied), and our concerts do sometimes have organ or piano accompaniments – we have also sung with string players and trumpeters!

The choir has been in existence for over 30 years.

Our Conductor:

We are happy to say that we have recently appointed Huw Morgan as our conductor.

Huw Morgan read music at St Edmund Hall, Oxford, where he was organ scholar. After working first in the record industry as a producer for Meridian Records, then in the Financial Services, he has returned to study choral conducting and the organ as a postgraduate at the Royal Academy of Music.

For several years Huw was Director of music at All Saints’ Blackheath and is currently organist of St Laurence, Catford, a post previously held by David Sanger and Iain Simcock.

Recent recitals have included Newcastle Cathedral, and future engagements include St Mary Redcliffe, Bristol, and St Botolph’s Aldgate.

Huw has conducted many different choirs, and is the co-founder of the early music ensemble Oltramontani; he also has a growing reputation as a composer with several premieres of his work in the past year.

Previous conductors:

Freda Drage, Conductor and Musical Director from 1967 – 2001.

For a list of pieces performed under Freda Drage between 1967 and 1992, see:  Freda Drage Cappella Repertoire

Concerts:

We usually give 3 – 4 concerts a year (Christmas, Easter/Spring, and Summer), in local churches and halls.

For information about our next concert, go to:  Next Cappella Concert

Our programmes are quite varied, so why not come and hear some exciting live singing!!

At each concert refreshments are served, giving an opportunity for the audience and the choir to meet and chat.

Rehearsals:

New singers are welcome, especially (at present) Tenors and Basses!

If you enjoy singing, do come along and give us a try.

We rehearse on Thursday evenings (7.30 – 9.30), during term time, at:

Trinity United Reformed Church, Station Road, Upminster.
